Academics
The growth of every educational institution is largely based on its academic pillar. At Onua, we prioritize the academic welfare of our students by putting in place proper structures to prepare them for the world. Our academic structure is flexible, modern, and of world-class standard.
Onua Francis International School runs the Ghana Education Service curriculum in a more standardized way designed to meet the requirements of a world-class basic school. Aside from the prescribed curriculum for basic schools, Onua has gone the extra mile to integrate other academic programs into its curriculum. Extra academic programs offered at Onua includes;
a. Manners and Etiquette ( For all students)
b. Personal Hygiene (manned by the school’s nurse)
c. Music (For all students)
d. French (For all students)
e. Sensorial (For preschool students only)
f. UCMAS (For all students)
For our students to keep abreast of current trends, they are encouraged to listen to the news every evening and report on the same every morning in class before active lessons commence.
Academic Departments
The classes have been grouped into four (4) departments each, headed by a departmental head.
- Preschool Department (crèche, nursery and kindergarten)
- Lower Primary (Basic 1 to Basic 3)
- Upper Primary (Basic 4 to Basic 6)
- Junior High Department (JHS1-3)
Teaching and Learning
Teaching and learning at Onua Francis is done in an improved way by integrating ICT and the use of audiovisual aids.
There are Television sets with internet connectivity in all classrooms which helps learners to communicate with their peers in other parts of the world. Teachers also use the T.V monitors and the Internet to present their lessons.
We ensure that our facilitators strictly employ the child-centered approach to teaching and learning. CCTV cameras are fixed in all classes to monitor this. An enabling environment is created in our classrooms for learners to explore, interact, and feel safe while learning.
There are enough teaching and learning materials to make teaching and learning very easy.
Assessment / Examination
Facilitators are encouraged to conduct regular assessment to ascertain whether the instructions delivered were properly understood or not.
Facilitators are expected to assess learners daily after each lesson. Assessment could either be oral or written.
At the end of each month, learners are again given a monthly assessment (for everything studied within the month).
Apart from our internal assessment, learners (finalist in JHS3) are also assessed by the West Africa Examination Council’s annual Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Homework / Research
It is the policy of the school to give homework or research work regularly. This is done to complement the teaching and learning done in school and also encourage learners to develop the habit of learning on their own.
Parents are encouraged to only assist learners in their research work or homework by providing further explanations. Parents are discouraged from writing and providing direct answers for learners.
